GRAND FINALS WRAP UP - PREMIERS CROWED AS SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE(March 25, 2013) A thrilling weekend of Grand FInal water polo action at the Valley Pool saw the 2012/13 Premiers crowned in both the Junior and Senior competition. The Grand Finals were all hotly contested. On the Junior side, Saturday's matches were all close matches many of which came down to the wire. |
|
On the Senior side of the competition, Sunday's Grand Finals results included Warriors Women winning X Grade and Warriors Men taking out Division 2. The X Grade men's match was a block buster that required extra time and a penalty shoot out to split the teams. Ultimately it was Avalon Icebergs (pictured left) who unthroned the Barracudas Old Boys from their 7 year run of the Premiership. Division 2 Women was taken out by River City while the Barracudas Club claimed top honours in the Division 1 Men and Women's categories. The Cudas defeated the Barras in the women's Div 1 Grand Final while the men's Div 1 match was called with 0:43 remaining due to the sudden onset of Sunday's "super storm" that brought with it severe and dangerous lightning. At that time, the Barracudas had a 10-6 unassailed lead, a margin too great to make up in the remaining time and were deemed to the be the Premiers of 2012/13. The BWPI Committee would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people - parents, Club volunteers, coaches, managers, referees, Pool Coordinators and players - whose dedication and assistance enables Brisbane Waterpolo to successfully run 75 Junior and 18 Senior games every week of its 15-17 week season. |

Andrew Carney added another milestone to his refereeing career at Sutherland Pool on Sunday. He has now officiated 500 Water Polo Australia National Water Polo League games - the Women's game between the Cronulla Sharks and Longmont Fremantle Marlins marking that milestone.
Andrew was a member of Queensland Water Polo while he resided in Brisbane from 2005 - 2010. Many of his 500 NWPL games have been Home Games firstly of Barracudas and then Breakers as well here in Brisbane.
Andrew was appointed to referee in NWPL in 1998 and refereed his first Final Series (Bronze Medal) in 2000. He has been a member of the WPA FINA Referee panel since 2002. He has officiated at World League Finals, Junior Women's World Championships World Cup, toured internationally with Australian National teams and has been appointed by FINA to be a neutral referee at qualifying events.
He was very much involved in the development of junior referees and extending their pathways through to the Senior ranks in the Brisbane Water Polo Inc competition. He introduced the mentoring program that is still followed and carried on by a few of his protégés.
BWPI congratulates Andrew on a fantastic achievement and refereeing carfeer. We would also like to acknowledge his contribution to water polo in Brisbane and his continued interest in the development of referees with the association. We wish him continued success and recognition as a National and International Referee.
BWPI has made the course package available for all to reference to assist those interested in table duties. The package is ideal to refresh yourself if you area bit rusty or for new comers who are keen to see what is involved. Have a look and download the presentation by clicking the link below.
